HODL

HODL means holding a cryptocurrency for the long term instead of selling during price swings. The word began as a typo of hold in a 2013 Bitcoin forum post and became one of crypto's best-known slogans and a common investing approach.

Where HODL comes from

In December 2013, during a sharp Bitcoin price drop, a user on the Bitcointalk forum posted a message titled I AM HODLING. The post admitted the author was a bad trader and would simply hold rather than try to time the market. The misspelling spread quickly as a meme. The expansion hold on for dear life was invented later and is not the original meaning.

HODL as a strategy

As an approach, HODL means buying an asset you believe in for the long term and not reacting to short-term moves. Supporters argue that most traders fail to beat the market after fees, taxes and emotional mistakes, and that holding avoids those costs. Many holders combine it with buying regular amounts over time, known as dollar-cost averaging.

Say you buy 0.1 BTC and hold it through a 50% fall and a later recovery. You avoid selling at the low, but you also experience the full drawdown on paper. The outcome depends entirely on what the asset does over your holding period.

Risks and common mistakes

Holding only works out if the asset keeps or gains value over time. Many tokens that were held through crashes never recovered. Holding Bitcoin, a widely used and established network, is a very different bet from holding a small token whose project may be abandoned.

Other common mistakes include investing money you will need soon, which can force a sale at a bad time; holding on an exchange that later fails, instead of considering self-custody; and losing access to a wallet over years because a seed phrase was not stored safely. Holding long-term also means reviewing your reasons from time to time, not ignoring new information.

Frequently asked questions

What does HODL stand for?

Originally nothing; it was a misspelling of hold in a 2013 forum post. The backronym hold on for dear life was added later.

Is HODLing a good strategy?

It depends on the asset, your time horizon and your finances. Long-term holding avoids trading costs and emotional mistakes, but it offers no protection if the asset loses value permanently.

Should I HODL on an exchange?

Coins on an exchange depend on that company staying solvent and secure. Many long-term holders prefer a wallet they control, which in turn requires careful backup of the seed phrase.
