Diamond Hands

Diamond hands is slang for an investor who keeps holding an asset through extreme volatility and heavy losses without selling. It is used as praise in online communities, the opposite of paper hands, who sell at the first sign of trouble.

Where the term comes from

The phrase circulated in online trading forums for years and became widely known in early 2021, when users of a large Reddit investing community used it to encourage each other to keep holding GameStop shares during that stock's extreme swings. Crypto communities adopted it quickly, often written with diamond and hands emoji.

How it is used

Calling someone diamond hands praises conviction: the person refused to panic when prices dropped sharply. It is closely related to HODL, and both reflect the idea that many investors lose money by selling during sharp falls and missing the recovery.

Say you hold a token that drops from 10 to 4 dollars in a month while social media is full of fear. Holding through that drop, and seeing the price later return to 8 dollars, is what communities would celebrate as diamond hands.

The other side of the story

The same behaviour looks very different when the price never comes back. Holding a token from 10 dollars all the way to 0.10 dollars is also diamond hands. Survivorship bias plays a role here: success stories get shared widely, while people who held to zero rarely post about it.

In communities around a single coin, diamond hands can become social pressure. Encouraging others not to sell can benefit early holders who need buyers to stay in. Holding is a decision you should be able to justify with your own reasons, not loyalty to a group.

A more useful way to think about it

Conviction is valuable when it rests on research and a position size you can afford to lose. Setting your rules in advance, such as how much of your money goes into a volatile asset and under what conditions you would change your mind, gives you the calm the phrase celebrates without the blind spots.
