Delta-Neutral
A delta-neutral strategy combines positions whose price exposures cancel out, so the total barely changes when the market moves. The aim is to earn income such as funding payments, trading fees or spreads without betting on direction.
What delta means here
Delta measures how much a position's value changes when the underlying price moves. Holding 1 BTC has a delta of plus 1 BTC: if bitcoin rises 1,000 dollars, you gain 1,000. A short position of 1 BTC has a delta of minus 1. Add the two and the delta is zero, so price moves roughly cancel out.
That is the whole idea. You keep the part of a trade that pays you, and hedge away the part that depends on price.
Common crypto examples
The best-known version is cash-and-carry with perpetual futures: buy a coin on the spot market and open an equal short perpetual position. When funding is positive, longs pay shorts, so the short side collects funding while the spot holding offsets price moves. Synthetic dollar designs such as Ethena's USDe, launched in 2024, use this mechanism at scale.
Other versions pair a liquidity pool position with a short hedge to earn trading fees, or combine options so that their deltas sum to zero.
An example with round numbers
Say you buy 1 BTC at 60,000 dollars and short 1 BTC of perpetual futures at the same price. If bitcoin rises to 66,000, the spot coin gains 6,000 and the short loses about 6,000. If it falls to 54,000, the reverse happens. Meanwhile, if funding averages 0.01% every eight hours, the short collects about 6 dollars per payment, around 6,500 dollars over a year, before trading fees. That income is the point of the trade.
The risks that remain
Neutral does not mean riskless. Funding can turn negative, so the short pays instead of earning. The short leg needs margin and can be liquidated in a sharp rally if it is not topped up, even while the spot leg gains. Positions on a centralized exchange carry counterparty risk, as FTX's collapse in 2022 showed. Fees, slippage and the cost of rebalancing can eat the yield.
Delta also drifts. Liquidity pool positions and options change their delta as prices move, so the hedge must be adjusted, and gaps between spot and futures prices can create temporary losses. Before trusting any delta-neutral product, ask where the income comes from, what happens when it turns negative, and who holds the assets.

Frequently asked questions
Is delta-neutral trading risk-free?
No. It removes most direct price exposure, but funding, liquidation, counterparty, smart contract and execution risks remain.
Where does the profit in a delta-neutral strategy come from?
From income that does not depend on direction, such as funding payments, the basis between spot and futures, trading fees or incentives.
Why does a delta-neutral position need rebalancing?
Because the delta of some positions, such as pool shares or options, changes as prices move, and margin on the short leg must be maintained.
