Maximum Supply
Maximum supply, or max supply, is the largest number of coins or tokens that can ever exist under a project's rules, if such a limit is defined. Bitcoin's is 21 million; many other assets have no cap at all.
How a supply cap works
A maximum supply is enforced by code. In Bitcoin, the block reward halves every 210,000 blocks, so the total amount issued converges on just under 21 million BTC and can never exceed it; any block that tried to create more would be rejected by every node. In a token contract, the cap is usually a hard limit checked whenever new units are minted.
Once the cap is reached, no new units can be created unless the rules themselves are changed. For a decentralized network, changing them requires broad agreement among users and node operators, which is why Bitcoin's cap is considered very hard to alter.
Capped versus uncapped
Not every asset has a maximum supply. Ethereum's ether has no fixed cap; its supply depends on staking issuance minus the fees burned under EIP-1559. Dogecoin issues a fixed amount of new coins every year forever. Stablecoins have no cap because units are minted and burned as people deposit and redeem money.
Uncapped does not automatically mean bad, and capped does not automatically mean scarce in practice. What matters is how fast supply grows compared with demand.
Max supply versus other supply figures
Total supply counts units that exist today, including locked ones. Circulating supply counts what is actually available to trade. Maximum supply is the ceiling for the future. A token with 100 million circulating, 400 million total and a 1 billion max supply still has most of its supply ahead of it.
Common mistakes
A cap tells you nothing about who holds the supply or when it will be released. Projects can also redefine their max supply through upgrades or governance votes, so it is worth checking whether the cap is enforced in code and who can change it.

Frequently asked questions
What is Bitcoin's maximum supply?
21 million BTC. Because of rounding in the issuance schedule, the true final total will be slightly below that, and the last fractions are expected around the year 2140.
Does Ethereum have a max supply?
No. ETH has no hard cap; its supply changes with staking issuance and the fees burned on each transaction.
Can a max supply be changed?
Technically yes, if the protocol or contract is upgraded. Whether that is realistic depends on who controls the rules.
