All-Time High (ATH)

An all-time high, or ATH, is the highest price an asset has ever traded at. In crypto, ATH is also used for the distance from that peak, as in a coin trading 60% below its ATH.

How an ATH is measured

An ATH is the highest recorded trade price, usually in US dollars, across the exchanges a data provider tracks. Because a brief spike on a single exchange can set a record, different sites sometimes show slightly different ATH figures and dates. Some charts use daily closing prices instead, which give a lower and less noisy figure.

ATHs can also be measured in other currencies. An asset can be at an all-time high in euros or Swiss francs while still below its dollar record, because exchange rates move too.

Why ATHs draw so much attention

When an asset reaches a new high, everyone who ever bought it is in profit on paper. There are no previous buyers waiting to sell at break-even, which some traders see as removing a source of selling pressure. Headlines and social media tend to amplify new highs, bringing in new buyers.

In crypto, ATHs have often clustered near the late stage of bull markets, when attention and speculation peak.

An example

Say a token rose to 10 dollars at its peak, then fell to 3 dollars. It is now 70% below its ATH. To get back to 10 dollars, it would have to rise by about 233%, because percentage losses and gains are not symmetrical. That asymmetry is why a large drawdown takes a much larger rally to recover.

Risks and common mistakes

Buying because an asset is making new highs, driven by fear of missing out, has often meant buying close to a cycle top. Many crypto assets have fallen 70% to 90% from their peaks, and some never returned.

The opposite mistake also happens: assuming a coin far below its ATH is cheap and must recover. An ATH is a historical fact, not a target. Supply may have grown through token unlocks, the project may have lost users, or the ATH may have been set by a short speculative spike.

Frequently asked questions

What does ATH mean in crypto?

ATH stands for all-time high, the highest price an asset has ever traded at. The opposite is ATL, all-time low.

Will a coin return to its all-time high?

There is no guarantee. Some assets have surpassed earlier highs, while many others never recovered. The past peak does not tell you what the price will do.

Why do ATH figures differ between websites?

Sites track different exchanges, may use intraday highs or daily closes, and filter outlier trades differently, so recorded peaks can vary.
