Wallets & Security
Take the keys off the internet, and many attack paths lead nowhere.
Most attacks reach you through the internet. Cold storage keeps access separated from the online world — a principle, not a promise, and it fixes exactly one class of risk.
The problem
If the key is offline, how does anything ever get signed?
Three presses, one stage each. Watch which side of the gap the key is on at every stage.
One transaction, two devices
NOTHING PREPAREDNothing has been prepared yet. The key sits on the offline device. Press Prepare the transaction.
The key signs without a standing internet connection. The transaction is prepared on the online device, signed offline where the key stays protected, and only the completed signature is transmitted. The transaction crossed the gap twice. The key crossed it zero times — which is the entire mechanism, and all of it.
No. Cold storage lowers online risk specifically — malware and phishing have a much harder time reaching keys held offline. That is the one thing it does. It does not replace a careful backup: a poorly secured seed is still the whole holding, and losing it is still final. It does not replace attentive confirmation: a transaction you approve without understanding it is signed just as willingly offline as online. And it changes nothing whatsoever about what the asset is worth — custody protects access, not price. Volatility stays volatility. Physical theft and tampered devices remain real risks too. Security is always principle plus behaviour, never just a product.

KEYS ONLINEThe bridge
The split, and why holding both is normal.
Not a compromise between two options — a deliberate separation that uses both.
The separation is the core of the strategy: your long-term holding stays protected offline, your daily activity stays practical. Cold protects the holdings — but this lesson kept the offline device abstract on purpose. The next lesson takes apart the best-known tool built for the job, and the one thing on it that a compromised computer cannot lie to you through.
